Attendance & In-person Session Policies
ACADEMY 21 ATTENDANCE REQUIREMENTS
Attendance in a virtual hybrid school is the responsibility of the student and the parent/guardian. The school’s task is to provide instruction, parent/guardian access to the student’s online activity, and communicate regularly about student progress. Attendance is monitored through weekly two-way mentor contacts, virtual coursework completion, and in-person sessions.
WEEKLY TWO-WAY MENTOR CONTACTS
The State of Michigan Pupil Accounting rules require documented weekly two-way academic conversations between the student and their mentor. These are called “mentor contacts.” A two-way conversation is documented as a mentor question, a student response, and a mentor response. Contacts must be academic in nature. Parents of younger elementary age students may participate in the conversation, as appropriate.
Mentors in grades 6-12 are assigned by the school, with an effort to place a student with one of their subject area teachers.
Students and mentors may satisfy the contact requirements with face-to-face conversations (Google Meet or Academic Lab), text messages, email, or phone calls.
VIRTUAL COURSEWORK ATTENDANCE
All students in grades 6-12 are expected to complete coursework Monday-Friday. Attendance is taken Monday-Friday based on student session logs.

Students who do not meet daily expectations will be marked UNEXCUSED.
Based on course structures, students should expect to work a minimum of 45 minutes per class per day. This is approximately 5 hours total, whether in-person or at home.

IN-PERSON SESSION ATTENDANCE
Students in grades 6-12 will attend required in-person sessions as individually determined by administration, mentors, and parents. The schedule is monitored by the mentor teacher.
Students have options for attending an AM or PM session, or may take the school bus session if they live in district. Students are not allowed to attend for a full day.
The purpose of attending in-person sessions will vary for each student. Some students may wish to get help from one of their core area teachers and support staff, some may wish to have a quiet place to work, others may wish to participate in a hands-on learning experience.

REPORTING ABSENCES
Parents are requested to call the school office (586-510-2062) before school begins, or as soon as possible, if the student will be absent and unable to complete online coursework or attend an assigned in-person session. Contact must be made within 24 hours to have the student’s absence excused.

PRE-EXCUSED/EXTENDED ABSENCES
Absences for family vacations or travel during scheduled school days are discouraged; however, should it be necessary for a student to be absent for a family vacation or travel, a pre-excused absence should be reported to the school office (586-510-2062) one week prior to the event. Extending school vacations by taking additional days off is strongly discouraged.
CHRONIC ABSENTEEISM
Schools are required by law to keep track of attendance. If your student is identified as exhibiting chronic absenteeism, a compulsory attendance letter will be mailed home. Chronic absenteeism is defined after a student misses 8 school days. Truancy officials will be contacted in the event of a student’s excessive absences. Students with more than 20 unexcused absences may be placed on academic probation or dismissed from the program.
